GBP - British Pound Sterling: British Pound Sterling denoted with £ is the official currency of United Kingdom and the oldest currency in continuous use. It is subdivided into 100 pence. Sterling is the fourth most-traded currency in the foreign exchange market, after the United States dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen. The pound sterling emerged after the adoption of Carolingian monetary system in England c 800 CE. Since the suspension of the gold standard in 1931 the pound sterling has been fiat money, with its value determined by its continued acceptance in the national and international economy. Modern GBP currency started in 1694 with the establishment of the Bank of England followed by the Bank of Scotland a year later. Both began to issue paper money.
